Eric, Katelynn, Nelson, and Zaahidah 9WW questions

1. What types of professions would be celebrated in a modern poetic tribute to Americans? Teachers, scientist, doctors, nurses, shoemakers, Technitions, firefighters, police, and soliders would be celebrated in a modern poetic tribute to Americans

2. What words and phrases indicate Whitman’s empathy with heroic people? "I Hear America Singing" and "their melodies songs" are phrases that indicate Whitman's empathy with herioc people.

3. If you could choose a modern American hero to add to Whitman’s poem, “I Hear America Singing,” Who would you choose and why? Oprah, because she has accomplished many things from a modest backgroud.

4. What do you believe is Whitman’s concept of heroism? Someone who looks after other people who looks for nothing in return.

5. Throughout “Song of Myself,” Whitman uses the pronoun “I” in order to empathize with people. What effect does this use of the first person have on the reader? It makes them feel as if they are not the only people with these problems and they are not the only person who has to work hard

6. How would Whitman celebrate the cultural diversity found in America today? He would enjoy it and write about it because he would probably be happy with the fact that people are able to live together peacefully even though they are culturally diverse

7. What landscapes do you feel Whitman would praise today? The landscapes that Whitman would praise today are the Liberty Bell, and Statue of Liberty because of what it symbolizes.

8. What sound devices would be reminiscent of Whitman’s style to describe these landscapes? The sound devices that would be reminiscent to Whitman style would be imagery and personification

9. Do you think Whitman would sing the praises of technology? Explain. Our group came to a conclusion that Whitman would not sing the praises of technology because he would probably feel as if the meaning of "work" and physical labor would be forgotten because it would be making life to easy for civilians
