Walt Whitman Webquest Worksheet

1. What types of professions would be celebrated in a modern poetic tribute to Americans? The type of profession that would be celebrated in America today are lawyers, judges, doctors, and firemen.

2. What words and phrases indicate Whitman’s empathy with heroic people? "I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear."

3. If you could choose a modern American hero to add to Whitman’s poem, “I Hear America Singing,” Who would you choose and why? We would chose a police officer because they risk their lives to protect us.

4. What do you believe is Whitman’s concept of heroism? We believe Whitman's concept of heroism is someone who is not afraid to stand up for what they believed in. He also believes it is a person who devotes their time into something they love and enjoy.

5. Throughout “Song of Myself,” Whitman uses the pronoun “I” in order to empathize with people. What effect does this use of the first person have on the reader? It has a big effect on the reader because he is not only talking about the people, but about himself too.

6. How would Whitman celebrate the cultural diversity found in America today? He would be proud because everything is equal and not segregated anymore like it was back in his day.

7. What landscapes do you feel Whitman would praise today? Whitman would praise Fairmount Park and the Walt Whitman bridge.

8. What sound devices would be reminiscent of Whitman’s style to describe these landscapes? The sounds devices that would describe these landscape is when he uses phrases/words like: carols, singing of the mother, melodious songs, the beating of my heart, and a few light kisses are where he uses sound devices.

Do you think Whitman would sing the praises of technology? Explain. No, because he seems like the type of person that praises things that is done by handwork and not the lazy way out.
