The words and phrases that indicate Whitman's empathy with heroic people are "I harbor for the good and bad" and "The delicious singing of the mother" becuase most people dont care about whether things are good or bad, they'll eventually get through it, and some people look up to their mother.

If I could choose a modern American hero to add to Whitman's poem , "I Hear America Singing," I would choose the firefighters that fought from 9/11. I would choose them because it takes a lot of courage to go in the building knowing what was going on, and to also risk your life for millions of people.

Whitman's concept of heroism is that anyone can be hero, as long as he/she chooses to be a hero and believes in being a hero, then he/she can fit to be a hero.
