1.What types of professions would be celebrated in a modern poetic tribute to Americans? Firefighters , teachers, medical workers, journalists.
2.What words and phrases indicate Whitman’s empathy with heroic people? Singing, blithe and strong, strong melodious song, delicious singing.
3.If you could choose a modern American hero to add to Whitman’s poem, “ I Hear America Singing,” Who would you choose and why? I would chose a school teacher because they educate the future of America and get little recognition for it.
4.What do you believe is Whitman’s concept of Heroism? Whitman’s concept of heroism is hard work and determination. Also, working to benefit your people and property.
5.Throughout “Song of Myself,” Whitman uses the pronoun “I” in order to empathize with people. What effect does this use of the first person have on the reader? The effect that it has in the reader is that it really reveals to you what is special and unique about Whitman and what he loves and connects you into that.
6.How would Whitman celebrate the cultural diversity found in America today? Whitman would probably celebrate it by praising it and celebrating the beauty of a melody of races.
7.What landscapes do you feel would praise today? I feel he would praise landscapes such as the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and the forests because they a hold a special beauty.
8.What sound devices would be reminiscent of Whitman’s style to describe these landscapes? The sound devices that would be reminiscent of Whitman would be blowing or maybe the sound of water.
9.Do you think Whitman would sing the praises of technology? Explain. I do not think he would because technology makes you forget the beauty of nature, something that Whitman highly praised.
